Here is Rancho Criollo. Nestled in a small valley and bordered on the east by the Caraqueno River. The farm is about 30 minutes from Rio San Juan, a municipality in the Maria Trinidad Sanchez province on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. The farm is titled and covers 558,815.14 square meters. I bought the farm in 2017 and took possession on November 1st of that year. Since that time there I have not used any pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers. When I bought the property, it was overgrazed and was unkempt and virtually stripped of visible grasses but even then, every time I went to see the land it appeared very green. It was what impressed me the most and convinced me that this was a quality piece of farmland. I must state at this time that I was completely inexperienced as I had never tried farming or had any experience with farm animals. For this reason, I had to try everything and learned the hard way, which is the best teacher, that I preferred to focus on cattle alone. In the early years it was difficult to feed more than 30 cattle as the soil was not that fertile and lacked organics. Now I have almost 50 head but it is obvious the farm can support much more. Between the cattle and mowing the soil is greatly improved.

I have a small crew of Dominicans working on the farm. The forman lives in the farmhouse and oversees the daily operation of the farm. There are two more men and a cook. All of them have families and live very near the farm. Generally, the hours of work are 8 hours per day and 5 days a week. There are 4 dogs, not completely by choice, but all rescues as with the three cats and two horses. However, all these animals serve a function. The dogs are a vital part of security, especially at night. The cats control the population of rats near the farmhouse and barn. The horses which have saddles, are used at times to observe and to herd the cattle.

The farmhouse and the well are powered by a very new 6 kw solar system with three ten kwh lithium batteries. The farmhouse is two-bedroom one bathroom and has a fridge, gas stove, two freezers, internet, smart tv and running water. There is a septic system which allows for a bathroom complete with toilet, sink and shower.

There are two wells on the property which tap into a large aquifer at approximately 70 feet deep. The water is mineralized crystal clear water that I have been personally drinking for about 4 years. There is also an artesian spring which flows into Rio Caraqueno just below the farmhouse. I took a water bottle of the well water back to Canada when I bought the farm and the test results show a very clean highly mineralized water with no heavy metals.

Compré la finca en el 2017 y tomé posesión el 1 de noviembre de ese año. Desde entonces no he usado pesticidas, herbicidas ni fertilizantes químicos. Cuando compré la propiedad, estaba sobrepastoreada, descuidada y prácticamente sin pasto visible, pero aun así, cada vez que iba a ver el terreno lo encontraba muy verde. Eso fue lo que más me impresionó y me convenció de que era una tierra de buena calidad para agricultura. Debo decir que en ese momento yo no tenía experiencia, nunca había trabajado en agricultura ni con animales. Por eso tuve que probarlo todo y aprender a la mala, que es el mejor maestro, y así me di cuenta de que prefería enfocarme solo en ganado. En los primeros años era difícil alimentar más de 30 reses porque el suelo no era muy fértil y le faltaba materia orgánica. Ahora tengo casi 50 cabezas y es evidente que la finca puede soportar muchas más. Entre el ganado y el corte de maleza, el suelo ha mejorado muchísimo.

Tengo un pequeño equipo de dominicanos trabajando en la finca. El capataz vive en la casa de campo y supervisa las operaciones diarias. Hay dos hombres más y una cocinera. Todos tienen familia y viven cerca de la finca. Generalmente trabajan 8 horas al día, 5 días a la semana. Hay 4 perros, no completamente por elección, sino porque fueron rescatados, igual que los 3 gatos y los dos caballos. Pero todos cumplen una función: los perros son vitales para la seguridad, especialmente de noche; los gatos controlan los ratones cerca de la casa y el establo; y los caballos, que tienen montura, se usan para observar y arrear el ganado.

La casa y el pozo funcionan con un sistema solar de 6 kw muy nuevo, con tres baterías de litio de 10 kwh cada una. La casa tiene dos habitaciones y un baño, con nevera, estufa de gas, dos freezers, internet, smart TV y agua corriente. Tiene un sistema séptico que permite baño completo con inodoro, lavamanos y ducha.

Hay dos pozos en la propiedad que se alimentan de un acuífero grande aproximadamente a 70 pies de profundidad. El agua es cristalina y mineralizada, y llevo casi 4 años bebiéndola. También hay un manantial artesiano que desemboca en el río Caraqueño justo debajo de la casa. Me llevé una muestra de agua a Canadá cuando compré la finca, y los resultados demostraron que era un agua muy limpia, altamente mineralizada y sin metales pesados.
